How to Get Into Sushi


Sushi can be a daunting food to try for a lot of people. I don’t think that I have met so many people who are opposed to sushi. So, I thought that I would share some tips to sushi that you can keep in mind the next time you go with a friend to get sushi.


Learn your Seafood | There are basic seafood that are used in sushi: tuna, salmon, eel, and crab. Most sushi restaurants will use those four, there are fancier places that use octopus, lobster, etc. However, if you just stick with the basics, you should be fine.


Start Simple | If you are not willing to venture into raw seafood just yet, try a veggie sushi roll or seaweed salad. I think that a lot of people don’t like the texture but vegetables and seaweed can help imitate that kind of texture in your mouth. Adjustment before diving in hardcore.

Sharing is Caring | If you have someone who is willing to share a piece of their sushi roll, it makes it a little easier and you can always pay another part of the meal in exchange. Trying a piece of sushi saves you and everyone at the restaurant time and money.

Order the Most Popular Roll | The California roll is a staple to most sushi restaurants, some make them slightly different, but they are mainly the same all around. Sushi rolls in America are definitely adapted to ease a lot of people into sushi because legit sushi can be overwhelming. You can also ask the waiter or waitress for the most popular roll or a roll that is great for beginners. More than likely, they have come across this situation. Don’t be timid or embarrassed!


Be Adventurous | If you are feeling brave, a sushi buffet is the best, you can just have one piece of everything and get to know what is inside each piece. No one is going to judge you and by eating one piece, you aren’t wasting a whole roll if you don’t like it. Make a mental note of things that you like, that could be that you prefer the spicy sauce drizzled on top or the yellow radish that gives you a nice crunch. The options are limitless once you have a good grasp on different flavors and rolls.
